Stunning Sand Art: Low Tide Aliens
Please join me in welcoming my guest for today’s blog, Laura Wright who started a project with her daughter, inspired by her passion for peace and the freedom to create. Laura and Darla use their artistic skills to draw beautiful pieces on the beach, knowing they will be washed away in the tides. When I found their work on Instagram, I was immediately impacted and wanted to learn more. I am so excited to share the inspiring story of how these stunning sand art masterpieces began, and the beautiful women behind it all.
Q: How did Low Tide Aliens Get Started?
A: 'I have always been artistic, but haven’t always had the freedom to create based on my passion. I was painting murals in residential homes, but found myself stuck. I was confined to painting exactly what the homeowner wanted, which honestly felt like it removed dignity and respect as for me as an artist. So, one day I was meandering on the beach near Newport Beach pier when the waves were small and the tide was low and felt the urge to draw something in the sand. Simultaneously, a large crowd began to gather, who were as excited about the process and the beautiful results as I was. We received a lot of compliments and encouragement so we decided to keep doing it.'
Q: What makes you so passionate about your art?
A: 'It brings joy to people at no cost and is a creative way to represent and provide perspective for things that are going on in the world. For example, one of our latest projects was a piece of honor and representation for the victims of the Orlando shooting. It is important to acknowledge things that are going on in the world and not think selfishly about them. We are not the center of the universe; we are part of it.'
Q: How do you feel knowing that your art will wash shortly after you create it?
A: 'We plan our timing on the moons and the correlation to the tides, and create each drawing knowing that we will watch it wash away. It gives us a sense of healing and freedom. When we are creating the sand art, all of our worries are set aside for a short amount of time, and it becomes therapeutic until the moment that it is completely washed away.'
I am so grateful to feature Laura today, and to share with everyone their wonderful way of bringing the community together in Orange County.
