It's Whale Watching Season in OC!
I recently took an amazing whale watching tour with Newport Coastal Adventure, and was so thrilled with my experience, I couldn't wait to share it! I was shocked how fast our captain Ryan took off into the waves. You get a rush of adrenaline and feel like you are on an adventure for sure!
Fortunately, it's the perfect time to book your own tour, as it's peak whale watching season and you're bound to see at least a few of the eight amazing species regularly seen on whale watching tours in Newport Beach.
Today I have Captain Ryan Lawler joining us on the blog to share some of his expertise and unique details about what makes their tour such an exciting venture. Enjoy!
Hello, it's me Ryan! Thanks for having me on the blog today.
YES - it's whale watching season! We are right in the middle of the Gray Whale migration, as 20,000 of these animals move from Alaska to Mexico, and then return to Alaska, from December through May off the California coast. And the best is really yet to come: thousands of baby whales are born in Mexico, and pass right by our coastline with their moms in the next few months. This is really my favorite time of year, as these whales are very playful on their northbound migration, and often coming into shallow water just off our Orange County beaches. While Gray Whales are the most consistent sighting, we've also had some other impressive animals around: from breaching Humpbacks to gigantic Fin Whales, you never know what you might see. The last several years in March and April the Fin Whales, up to 75 feet long and the second largest animal on the planet, have showed up to feed right off of Newport Beach!
Q: Why Choose Newport Coastal Adventures?
There are two best things about working for Newport Coastal Adventure: One is showing people the magic of nature right next to the tall buildings and expensive homes of 'The OC', and the other is never knowing what you're going to find! The ocean is the last truly wild place left in Orange County and always full of surprises.
Also, there are many other whale watching tours available, but the unique feature of booking with NCA is that the boat is quite small, making it quicker and easier to reach rare sightings of whales, that might not be as accessible if you were to take a huge boat. The experience we can give our passengers is unlike any other offered here in Orange County. Our boats are 24' long and built for the US Military for ocean conditions. We get to cruise at 20 mph, which lets us see a lot in just 2 hours- never a dull moment! And because our boats are close to the water with an open deck, the ability to view the sea life on their level makes it very exciting.
Q: What Types of Whales Can I Expect to See on a NCA Tour?
At Least 5 Types of Baleen Whales
At Least 3 Types of Toothed Whales
Q: What Else is Unique About Newport Coastal Adventures?
The Newport Beach coastline is an ideal location for whale watching and dolphin watching, and the experienced captains of Newport Coastal Adventure have mastered the ability to navigate the contours of the ocean and follow the feeding and migration pattern of the whales. In some places off the East Coast, visitors must travel 30 or more miles to see whales, whereas in Newport Beach, the proximity is much closer, making it a very convenient spot for whale watching.
Thank you so much for joining us on the blog, Ryan! To book your own exciting whale watching tour and check out rates, discover more info on their website.
