Today we’re sharing a fun Q & A with the owner (and friend of mine!) Amy from Twist and Shout. Read on to learn more about what makes their company so unique and stand out from the rest.
Q & A with Amy from Twist & Shout
Not at all! We can pretty much do whatever people can dream of! Especially if they let us know ahead of time, our artists will spend lots of time researching and figuring out how to make certain balloon figures if they don't already know how to do it. If owls are what your child is dreaming about, we will make owls happen.
2) When you had your first son, you said you realized the importance of balloons at parties. Is there a story behind this?
I had spent 100's and 100's of hours at other people's parties and events. I knew that we brought a 'Wow' factor to the party but it wasn't until I was on the other side of things that I really realized how important this was. We had a 'Bob the Builder' party (yes our son’s name is Bob - it was cute then, but he doesn't think it's too funny now.) We went all out with decorations, little workshop areas, games, food, etc. and I was pretty excited about the way it turned out.
We have big families, so all of our niece and nephews from both sides were there, our friends kids, our neighbor's kids, there were a ton of people.
The problem was that there were a lot of people that didn't know each other.
So the party gets going and the kids were all being shy and not really interacting. It was such a bummer! We had poured so many hours into this party and the kids were hanging onto their parent's legs...that is until….the Balloon Guy showed up.
Within 15 minutes he had all the kids interacting with one another, sword fighting, laughing, and instant friends were made throughout the party. It may seem silly, but those balloons really brought the kids together.
3) What were you doing before you started this business and what made you take the leap of faith to make it official?
I was teaching during the day and my husband David was twisting balloons at night and working at a church during the day. We kept hearing the voice in our head saying you can't build a business on balloons! But opportunities kept coming across our path and it kept growing and growing. I learned balloons alongside of David and we began training more and more people. We realized that we had something unique here that could really catch fire if we get over our own insecurities. On the way to filing our business license, we called my mom and said 'What should we name this thing?' And on that day, Twist and Shout was born.
4) What do you love about what you do?
We have a two fold mission statement at Twist and Shout. The first part is to provide our clients with a memory of a lifetime through our exceptional entertainment. I love this part of our business but what gets me really excited is the second part of our mission statement. We exist to provide great financial and scheduling opportunities for young adults in their transitional years. I LOVE this part of my job. I love the young adults we work with. I can honestly say they are like family. Twisting balloons has allowed so many of them to travel, pay for college, do missionary work in other countries, and even begin their own families. We are so blessed that we get to have a part in that.
5) Can you one of your favorite events you put on?
This is a hard question because we have seen so many events done so well! The events I love so much are the unexpected and unique ones like a grandma'a 90th birthday party or a baby shower, places you don't usually expect us to be there. But my absolute favorite event is one that David and I have done together for the last 18 years. David met a grandma and grandpa when he was twisting balloons at Joe's Crab Shack. Every year they host an all out Christmas party weekend at their home. When we first started, the grandkids were just a few years old, now they have about 15 more grandkids and some have even graduated college. It's so fun to be a part of our client's family and memories. The hard part with that event is coming up with new things that they haven't seen over the last 18 years!!!
